A public statement against the disappearance of philosophy
in reform Sep
national philosophical community, is deeply concerned by the disappearance of philosophy in the plans and programs of study offered by high schools across the country, as stated in the "Reform of School Education "(RIEMSER) published on September 26, 2008 in the Official Journal of the Federation, through the 442 Agreement.
This reform seeks to unify the teaching in all subsystems, from what he calls "competencies and skills" whose purpose is to train individuals who will join the national labor market, as part of the "globalization." In the RIEMSER, philosophy has been removed from all basic disciplines and the only role assigned to it is expressed in a footnote of that agreement, which states that the philosophical disciplines, will have "a cross-cutting" and " may be included if relevant, that is, evidently as random and discretionary. Likewise, the humanities are ignored as basic training area for students, considered necessary and sufficient only to mathematics, some natural and social sciences and communication.
is clear that the general features of this reform from indications OECD Bologna Accords and the Tuning Project for the European Union are not relevant for our country, which should make educational reform taking into account its own history and its characteristics as a nation. Similarly, the criticisms that have emerged in Europe at the Bologna Process should be interpreted as a warning to the perpetrators and instigators of this reform. On the other hand, the Mexican government should be against the main lines of UNESCO, who has been making efforts fairly universal in the opposite direction, ie, to philosophy, humanistic character, not only teach in high school but in all areas of society. UNESCO, which plays an active part in our country and adopted its resolutions, has stated explicitly, through their documents, that philosophy contributes to the formation of citizenship, respect for multiculturalism, human rights, thought critical democracy, objectives put forward, at least in appearance, which eliminated the RIEMSER philosophy to the extent of leaving as a footnote to a footnote.
From the Restored Republic so far, the philosophy has been one of the guiding principles that guided the plans and high school curricula, however, today, for the first time, decides, autocratic way, eliminate philosophical subjects starting with the logic that since the time of Gabino Barreda, fulfilled the function of providing students with the necessary elements for the formation of right thinking. Similarly, it can be shown widely, the importance and need for other disciplines such as ethics, aesthetics, epistemology or the history of philosophy as an essential part of student training. Far from what one might think, these disciplines help anyone play a better way any activity.
teaching philosophy involves developing a personal training that results in the formation citizens with critical thinking, autonomous and reflective. This first contact, and unfortunately, almost alone, young people with the philosophical task, makes them more aware of themselves and the world they inhabit, allowing a real education in values from corruption, extreme inequality, discrimination and ignorance.
The new reform of the SEP, focusing on practical training, utility, alert against this type of training, absolutely necessary in a world whose main trends are productivism has led to the destruction of ecological systems and automation its effects, the inequality crisis values and the transition to a new figure in the world.
the foregoing, the undersigned, presidents of national philosophical associations, heads of faculties, departments and institutes of philosophy and philosophical members of the national community, we express, in a strong, against the marginalization and disappearance of philosophy as part of basic training school and ask the SEP their integration as a basic discipline. Without taking this measure, in addition to the severe lack of a humanistic education of the student, will inevitably lead to the demise of philosophy races across the country causing profound damage to national life and culture.
national philosophical community is not opposed to train people in the highest level of skills and abilities, but at the same time considered as absolutely necessary a philosophical background for this purpose can be fulfilled.
We call on Higher Education Institutions in Mexico, professional associations and the public to join in this statement.
